Vendor Spotlight: Hair by Jessie Liao
This month we’re pleased to be featuring local hair and bridal stylist, Jessie Liao! Jessie has been a stylist for six years and is currently in high demand at Hedkandi Salon. When she’s not behind the chair, she stays inspired through weddings, continued education and other collaborations. Jessie likes to roam the city in her spare time, with a cup of coffee, in search of her next houseplant. For more on Jessie and her gorgeous eye for hair, read on.
JR: Tell us about your business. How did you get started in hair styling?
JL: I’ve always loved playing with hair, but never thought I could make a career out of it. While serving at Earls six years ago, a close friend encouraged me to sign up for cosmetology school. I finally decided to commit, and haven’t looked back!
JR: Any cool new trends in hair we should know about? How do you stay up to date with styles?
JL: First and foremost, I believe that healthy hair is always on trend! I’m finding women are becoming braver, they’re not afraid to ditch the length. I love the mid-length lob, which more and more women are opting for. From a colour perspective, I’m drawn to rich, solid colours although I still adore balayage and the sun kissed hair look. I’m definitely seeing more richness and shine in solid colors like mahogany, chocolate browns and auburn.
In the wedding realm, I’m liking Hollywood glam waves for downstyle and high ponytails for upstyle. I stay up-to-date by following fashion trends, celebrity looks and wedding styles. Lately I’ve been super into European and Australian wedding design.
JR: What is your favourite thing about working in the wedding industry?
JL: Having the opportunity to create and be a part that bride’s day. Honestly, being able to make a mark on someone’s special day is really honourable to me! I fall in love at every wedding – the joy and excitement is infectious. I also appreciate the connections I build with vendors in the community; sharing our crafts on the same platform is incredible to me.
JR: Do you have any other creative outlets?
JL: I love collaborating with other vendors to bring a vision to life! I find I’m inspired by everyday people, interior designing and fashion the most.
JR: Where can we best find you?
